PowerSkating Academy giving players an edge

Madoc – Laura and Dave Levtov are teaching young local hockey players how cutting a figure on the ice will give them a competitive edge.

The founding directors of the Toronto-based PowerSkating Academy were at the Madoc and District Recreation Centre last week giving Centre Hastings Peewee players lessons in edge work and figures – the foundations of advanced skating skills.

“We teach skating for hockey,” said Laura Levtov, a professional figure skating and competitive figure skating coach. “So half of the class is for doing figures, and the other half is for doing the hockey specifics.”

Levtov likens learning edges and figures to learning the times-tables or the alphabet before learning to do advanced mathematics or learning to read. They are needed to establish the full control required to reach the highest levels of competition in both figure skating and hockey, she said, stressing that good skating requires the control of every part of the body…

On Thursday, September 18th the SNAP crew had the opportunity to join Laura Levtov and the Skating Educators Canada Inc group, which includes World and Olympic coach of Champions (such as Elvis Stojko and Jennifer Robinson) Michelle Leigh, former Marlie’s Coach and 1st round pick for the Maple Leafs Tom Martin, Olympic Gold medalist Vicky Sunohara from Team Canada, & 10yr NHL Veteran Mike Galati, as they took to the ice at the Thornhill Community Centre.

As you can see from the staff they cover all aspects of skating and are involved with many programs, teams and kids across the GTA. You couldn’t ask for a better team to take your children to the highest level of their skating ability!! It is never to late to start with this academy’s classes as they are based on ability not necessarily age.
With figure skating AND hockey, while your kids are growing up it is important to learn not only balance, but the fundamentals of using edges, proper stride and body position to fully develop a strong skating technique. Classes are kept small, with a 5:1 student to coach ratio for the best in hands on instruction and skill correction.
Featured here are some of their figure skating students practicing for an event held in Hamilton in September.

We will keep you posted on their results over the winter and in the future because with Laura and the team they all have strong potential to be future Olympic Champions!
